Shantou's BEST Kept Secret: GreenTree Inn Chengjiang Road Review (You WON'T Believe This!)
Shantou’s BEST Kept Secret: GreenTree Inn Chengjiang Road… Seriously, You Won’t Believe This! (A Rambling Review)
Okay, buckle up buttercups, because I’m about to drop some serious truth bombs about the GreenTree Inn Chengjiang Road in Shantou. And let me tell you, this place… it's a vibe. Forget pristine, picture-perfect hotel reviews. This is the real deal, warts and all, filled with my chaotic, caffeine-fueled musings. Consider this your personal travel log, spilling the tea on what it really feels like to stay here.
First Impressions (and a Plea for Someone To Fix the Elevator button!)
Alright, so I arrive, jet-lagged and craving a serious nap. First thing? Finding the hotel. (Pro-tip: Double-check the address before you arrive, unlike yours truly). Once I finally rolled up, the exterior isn't exactly the Ritz. It's… functional. Think clean lines, but maybe with a touch of “business hotel that’s seen a thing or two.” But hey, it had a working elevator, which is a win in my book (although that damn button to my floor… still waiting for someone to fix it). Accessibility: Seems alright, but I didn't have anyone with mobility problems so I couldn't really assess the specifics. There is a elevator to the various floors, which is a huge plus.
The Room: My Little Sanctuary (Mostly)
The room itself was… surprisingly decent. Available in all rooms: Air conditioning (thank GOD!), a mini-bar (score!), and free Wi-Fi (more on that later). They have Internet access – wireless and they Air conditioning.
Comforts of the room: They have a Bathrobes and Bathtub. They also have a Blackout curtains. They had a Closet that held all my clothes. They had a Coffee/tea maker which was a godsend. I loved that the room had a Complimentary tea. They have a Daily housekeeping service. A Desk to get some work done, and a Extra long bed. They also have Hair dryer. Plus points for the In-room safe box and having a Linens to have a good night's sleep. They had a Mirror and a Refrigerator. The TV Satellite/cable channels. There's a Seating area where I would relax at the end of the day before going to bed. They even had Separate shower/bathtub. They have a Shower and Slippers. The Smoke detector and Socket near the bed are a must! I was ecstatic with the Telephone and Towels. Wake-up service will always be appreciated. The Window that opens is a must! They have Additional toilet. They also have Alarm clock, a Carpeting, a Coffee/tea maker, a Hair dryer a Reading light. They had a Smoke detector, Sofa, Soundproofing.
The bed? Okay, it wasn't a cloud, but it was comfy enough, and I managed to sleep like a log (jet lag probably helped). The bathroom was… well, let’s just say it had all the necessities. Private bathroom. The toiletries? Standard hotel fare. I had to bring my own toothbrush. The Free bottled water was a lifesaver. The Non-smoking policy was also a bonus, since I don't enjoy smoking.
The Wi-Fi Saga (…And My Ongoing Love/Hate Relationship with It)
Internet access – wireless, Free Wi-Fi in all rooms!, Internet, Internet [LAN], Internet services, Wi-Fi in public areas, Wi-Fi for special events - Okay, the Wi-Fi. This is where things got… interesting. “Free Wi-Fi!” the sign screamed. And yes, it was technically free. But the connection was (at times) so spotty it felt like dial-up in the 21st century. I'd be mid-sentence on a video call, and poof! Goodbye, connection. Hello, frustration. I’m sure it would work great if you were just looking for a simple connection, but for a person like me, it was a big struggle. I did hear some people around me complaining. It was a bit slow, and sometimes it would have a hard time loading pages. Internet access – LAN was also available, but I could never get the connection.
Food, Glorious Food (and the Mystery of the Buffet)
Dining, drinking, and snacking, A la carte in restaurant, Alternative meal arrangement, Asian breakfast, Asian cuisine in restaurant, Bar, Bottle of water, Breakfast [buffet], Breakfast service, Buffet in restaurant, Coffee/tea in restaurant, Coffee shop, Desserts in restaurant, Happy hour, International cuisine in restaurant, Poolside bar, Restaurants, Room service [24-hour], Salad in restaurant, Snack bar, Soup in restaurant, Vegetarian restaurant, Western breakfast, Western cuisine in restaurant.
Okay, let’s talk food! Breakfast was included, and here’s where the GreenTree Inn REALLY surprised me. I did a bit of everything! They had a Breakfast [buffet] and they had a Breakfast service. Yes, it’s a buffet. The most amazing part was the Coffee/tea in restaurant. They serve A la carte in restaurant. There was Desserts in restaurant. They had a Snack bar. Also, they serve Western breakfast and Vegetarian restaurant. They had Asian breakfast. Everything was incredibly delicious and they serve some Asian cuisine in restaurant.
Other Amenities (and My Mild Disappointment)
Things to do, ways to relax, Body scrub, Body wrap, Fitness center, Foot bath, Gym/fitness, Massage, Pool with view, Sauna, Spa, Spa/sauna, Steamroom, Swimming pool, Swimming pool [outdoor]
Now, here's where GreenTree Inn REALLY falls down. They had a fitness center, but it was more like a corner with a treadmill and a sad-looking weight machine. Gym/fitness. No Pool with view or Swimming pool. No Spa, no Sauna, no Steamroom, and no Massage. Nada. Zip. Zero.

The hotel seemed to have a lot of cleaning and safety measures in place. They had a Daily disinfection in common areas and they had Hand sanitizer. There were Individually-wrapped food options. They were doing Physical distancing of at least 1 meter and they had Safe dining setup. They had Staff trained in safety protocol.

They have Air conditioning in public area, and they had Convenience store. There was Daily housekeeping! They had a Doorman and Elevator! The Laundry service and Luggage storage were life-savers. Security [24-hour] and Front desk [24-hour] are the essentials!
Getting Around (…and the Importance of a Good Map App)
Getting around, Airport transfer, Bicycle parking, Car park [free of charge], Car park [on-site], Car power charging station, Taxi service, Valet parking
Car park [free of charge] was a plus, however, if you were to travel by Taxi, you will be find. They had Airport transfer too!
Final Verdict (and Would I Come Back?)
So, would I recommend the GreenTree Inn Chengjiang Road? That's tricky. If you’re looking for luxury, pampering, and perfection, then absolutely not. Go somewhere else.
But… if you're a budget traveler, someone who prioritizes location (it's well-located!), a decent sleep, and a surprisingly good breakfast, then I say, maybe. The Wi-Fi issues are a bummer
Escape to Paradise: Stunning Scherpenisse Terrace Home Awaits!
Alright, buckle up buttercups, because we're about to get down and dirty with my Shantou adventure. Remember, this is NOT a perfectly curated travel blog post. This is the chaotic, caffeine-fueled reality of yours truly, in all my glory.
Trip Title: Shantou Shenanigans: Noodles, Nightmares, and Nifty Sunsets
Hotel: GreenTree Inn Shantou Chengjiang Road Business Hotel (God, that's a mouthful. Let's just call it the GreenTree, yeah?)
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Dumpling Debacle
Morning (ish): The flight. Let's be honest, flying is 80% boredom, 10% sheer terror (turbulence, anyone?!), and 10% the desperate hope that the person next to you isn't cracking open sardines. Arrived in Shantou, bleary-eyed and smelling faintly of airplane air. The airport felt HUGE. Like, "could-get-lost-and-become-a-case-study-in-geography" big.
Afternoon: Checked into the GreenTree. Okay, the lobby was… efficient. Clean, functional, but screamed "Business Hotel." My room? Uh…fine. Let's call it "adequately beige." Air con was a godsend, because, humidity. OMG, the humidity. I swear, I could practically see my hair frizzing the moment I stepped outside.
Evening: Food quest BEGINS! Shantou is famous for, well, everything delicious. I was on a mission. Found a little dumpling place down the road – looked legit, local, promising. THIS. WAS. THE. START. OF. A. NIGHTMARE. I ordered in my (limited) Mandarin, pointed, smiled enthusiastically. Minutes later, a plate of dumplings arrived, steaming and perfect. I took a bite…and nearly choked. They were, and I am not exaggerating, scalding. I'm talking molten lava in a doughy package. Tears streamed down my face (mostly because of the heat, but also, a little bit of the humiliation). I tried to discreetly fan my mouth with a napkin while looking nonchalant, but I'm pretty sure the entire restaurant was watching my suffering. Moral of the story: Always wait for a dumpling to cool. Always.
Night: Wandered around the Chengjiang Road area, feeling a bit lost. The street food smelled AMAZING. Like a symphony of spices and sizzling sounds. Was too traumatized by the dumplings to eat anything else, though. Ended up back at the GreenTree, eating instant noodles out of the vending machine. Glamorous, I know.
Day 2: Culture Shock (and a Surprising Amount of Kindness)
Morning: Decided to be adventurous. Got myself out the door early, like a very tired, slightly burnt (from the previous evening's dumplings) hero. The streets were bustling: scooters weaving, people chatting, smells of food everywhere. It was a glorious assault on the senses.
Afternoon: Visited a local temple. Wow. The golden Buddhas, the incense, the quiet chanting… it was breathtaking. I honestly felt a profound sense of peace, which after the dumpling incident, I needed. I spent a good two hours just wandering around, fascinated. Then, I totally got lost. Again. Ended up stumbling into a small tea shop. The owner, an elderly lady with the kindest eyes, didn’t speak a word of English, but she gestured me in and gave me a cup of tea. No pressure, no judgement. Just… kindness. It was so incredibly touching, and I started to fall for Shantou a little.
Evening: Trying again on food: went to a small restaurant with the help of some people, not wanting dumplings again. The food was fantastic! Some delicious dishes. I can't even remember their names, but they were perfect!
Day 3: The Beach, the Boredom, and the Battle with the Bugs
Morning: Went to the beach. The beach! In my research, everyone said it was the best thing. The water was murky, the sand was… well, it was sand. I sat on a bench, attempting to channel "zen," and was instantly swarmed by mosquitos. I'm talking thousands. It was like a biblical plague of tiny, biting devils. I flailed, I slapped, I ran. Eventually, I retreated to the relative (and I stress the word relative) sanctuary of a nearby coffee shop, feeling like a failure.
Afternoon: Back to the hotel. Watched some bad US TV. Found some snacks in a convenience store, the TV was bad, and the ceiling had the most incredibly loud sounds. I thought something was up with the building.
Evening: I have accepted all the bad things and decided to make use of the day by taking a walk. Went out to walk on a busy street, and the people of Shantou are incredibly helpful, just asking for directions, getting recommendations. And I went for dinner at a restaurant with a great view!
Day 4: Departure and the Lingering Scent of Shrimp Paste
Morning: Woke up, packed, and prepared to leave. The humidity seemed to have followed me into my room. The GreenTree had served its purpose, which was mostly to provide shelter. But as I walked out the door, I felt a pang of something…sadness? Yeah, maybe. Shantou had beaten me up, but it had also shown me a side of life I needed to see.
Afternoon: Headed back to the airport. The last thing I needed was the airport, but still, I'm going back home.
Evening: Flight time.
Overall Thoughts:
Shantou is… intense. It’s loud, it’s humid, it’s a little bit messy – just like me! The food can be mind-blowing (when it's not scalding), the people are incredibly friendly (even if you don’t speak the language), and the whole experience is undeniably real. I'm glad I went. I'd go back. But next time, I'm bringing industrial-strength mosquito repellent and a better dumpling strategy.
Rating:
- GreenTree Inn: 3/5 stars (Functional, but could use a personality transplant.)
- Shantou: 4/5 stars (Worth every slightly singed, mosquito-bitten moment.)
- My Sanity: A solid 2/5 (It's hanging in there.)
Ciao, Shantou. Until we meet again! (And next time, I'm ordering the noodles first.)
